No Water Waterfall

Due to water restrictions because of the drought, this waterfall had to be turned off. This area was really beautiful and impressive with the waterfall going.

It was a very popular place for the married couple to come here and have their photos taken.

We did get a little rain and that is why there is water in there now.

Galahs have a bouncing acrobatic flight, but spend much of the day sheltering from heat in the foliage of trees and shrubs. The voice is a distinctive high-pitched screech, 'chi-chi'. Huge noisy flocks of birds congregate and roost together at night.

This shows two of the birds using the lilypads to cross the water. The one on the left shows the lilypad submirged and the one on the right you can't even see it, but it is standing on one.

Bike Ramps

This area has been purpose built for bikes (pedal type). To the left of this area is the concrete ramps for bikes and skateboard riders to practice and display their skills.

The area in the photo has a concrete ramp with cover to the right and can be used to start races over the humps as see above. I wasn't in time to get a photo of some people using this area as when they finished the circuit, they rode off.

It would take a lot of skill to ride as fast as you can to win the race, but also not to go so fast as to fall off your bike if you can't control it. This is only a small portion of the track and continues back and forth down lower.

The Koala Bear

Ta Da! The sleeping koala in all its glory. Just look at the action. Oh well, being cute makes up for lack of vigour. I didn't get the photo's I wanted because of the bright light outside. I will post a close up tomorrow.

Koalas aren't bears as many people are led to believe. They aren't even related to bears. The koala is related to the kangaroo and the wombat. The koala is a mammal. The reason the koala is called a koala bear is because the koala looks like a teddy bear. The koala's scientific name is Phasclarctos cinereus.

I just missed a kangaroo jumping away as I was getting to the top. The koala's wern't around in the trees when I visited today, but they are inside which I will show in 2 more days.

When they are active, this would be a great place to observe them or just enjoy the scenery.

You have to be careful opening this door as this is home to sting-less insects. They do however bite if you really disturb them. I forgot what type of insects they were.

This is just off the walkway that takes you into the Koala center. Its main use is for weddings, but you can hire it out for whatever you need to present or have people watch.

Termite mound

Normally you would see these just by themselves. The nest would be underground where they cultivate their food, fungus. They make new vents and close old ones to regulate temperature so their food stays at the right temperature.

When the mound is up against a tree, it means the nest is inside the tree.

These pathways bring you higher into the tree so it is easier to spot a koala. There wern't any around (except indoors, which I will show you later) when I visited.

The bushland area between Daisy Hill and Redland Bay is important koala habitat. So, it is very fitting that a centre dedicated to koala conservation should be located there.

Koalas are a threatened species in the Southeast Queensland bioregion. In March 2004, the koala was included in the vulnerable species category of the Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulation 1994 because of a significant decline in the numbers of animals in the wild. The bioregion includes the Daisy Hill and Redland Bay area, as it stretches from the New South Wales border to Gladstone and west to Toowoomba.

Venerable Master Hsing Yun is the founder of the Foguangshan Buddhist order (originated from Taiwan.). His Dharma name, Hsing Yun, means 'star cloud' whilst foguangshan means “Buddha's Light Mountain”. After enduring poverty and oppression during World War II, he devoted his life to revitalising Buddhism so that it belongs to people – not just reclusive monastic orders.

Venerable Master Hsing Yun is an energetic and dynamic person from humble beginings, within his own lifetime he has developed a global organisation – the Buddha's Light Internatioanl Association (BLIA) that has libraries, temples and free health clinics around the world in over 200 locations. He is recognised as a world Buddhist leader alongside peers like the Dali Lama.

Gardens of the Chung Tian Buddhist Temple

‘Chung Tian Temple’ (which means ‘middle heaven’) was constructed in 1992 using traditional Chinese Buddhist architecture – it is situated between Brisbane and Logan, Queensland. Surrounded by nature, the Temple provides a peaceful and culturally beautiful venue for the community to celebrate their multicultural diversity and multi-faith harmony through Humanistic Buddhism.

As there were "no photography" signs up at the temple building entrance and inside, I only got photos of the gardens and the statues at the carpark entrance.

Some of the things used in days gone by. One of the items, the iron, must be placed on the stove to heat up so it can be used.

Once that heat is used, it must go back to the stove and it was very heavy.

A coffee grinder.

Daisy was always busy making cream, butter, jams and bottling fruit, preserving what she could for the off-season. Daisy would make or mend cloths on the sewing machine and then cook what was needed for a family hungry after a full day's work. There was no timer on the wood-burning stove and certainly no microwave to speed up the cooking. Baking bread was a daily necessity. It would take anything up to three hours to prepare a roast dinner for the table. When Daisy wasn't busy in the kitchen, she was boiling clothes in the copper so her family had clean sheets and underwear.

Sorry for no post yesterday, I was on holiday for 2 days.

This is one of the old stoves which you would have to fill with wood to use.

The Kitchen was built separate from the rest of the house, partly as a means of limiting the potential for a fire to take hold and destroy the entire house, the kitchen was the real centre of the family's daily life. Beyond all of the other rooms in the house, this was the place where Daisy, like most pioneering women, spent the great bulk of her time.

There are only 2 bedrooms in this house and the other bedroom has information boards about Mayes Cottage. This would mean all the kids would have to share one room.

Before this house was built, the entire family house that was only one room, would have fit in this space.

Ian Rohl, Josiah's grandson, remembers occasions when the family would gather around the piano for a good old sing-song. In this era, few people had a wireless and no one had TV. This was the era when you made your own fun and you learned to appreciate your family's voices and each one's ability to entertain the rest of the gathering. This was the most precious time of family life.

The Dining room

John and Emily Mayes brought their family up in this house, after surviving their first years in a simple slab hut. The dining room was the place where the family gathered on formal occasions. When Josiah and Daisy lived here, this room was the place where the family would meet for Sunday dinner.

That was, of course, if they weren't involved in choir practice after the morning church service. On those occasions, the family would take lunch with them, as the trip to and from Loganlea where the nearest church was located, would have made the more formal dinner at home far too late.

When the house was completed in 1887, the family moved and the hut became a shelter for a buggy and much later a car. As an example of the craftsmanship involved, lan Rohl remembers that the hut was still secure against rain and the wind sixty years after it was built.

You might think that this was a hard way for a family to live, especially when there was little here but scrub. Emily cooked on an open fire and used a hollowed-out anthill as an oven.

Consider then what John and Emily had left behind. John had been employed as a gardener on an estate in Bedfordshire England, while his wife worked as a house servant. There, they had little to look forward to but a life of uncertain servitude. Here, in Australia they owned 320 acres, an unheard of opportunity back in England.

The front room contains original family furniture dating from the 1880s till the 1930s, when John and Emily's eldest surviving son, Josiah, lived here. Comparing what you see here, with the many conveniences we enjoy these days, the lounge may seem small and sparsely furnished.

But, to Josiah and Daisy, and to the whole Mayes family, this was a better-than-average home. It remains to this day, a touchstone for them all.

The words on the plaque in the lower right hand corner say "The Original Slab Hut".

This hut was the original home of John and Emily Mayes, the founders of this property. Most of the slabs were cut from the outer timbers of large logs. Those logs would have been cut on the property, by axe and wedge, then trimmed with an adze. The original roof was made of bark and was later replaced with shingles.

A Pleasant Place

Despite the hardships endured in those early years, we can assume that this was a happy home by the name given to the home by John and Emily - "Pleasant Place", an ideal name for a cottage that commands such beautiful views. It symbolises the pride and the ideals of Logan residents.

Mayes Cottage is a genuine relic of Australia's and Queensland's pioneering age. Genuine because it is almost exactly as it was when it was built over a hundred years ago, in 1887.

This house, and what remains of the original slab hut that stands outside, are originals, not reproductions.

The house was built sixteen years after John and Emily Mayes had first arrived here.

Under the shade of the trees are some old fences and has an eerie feel about it.

The railway made a huge difference to the development prospects in the area. The late 1880's were a time of great prosperity. Not only did the coming of the railway mean that people could more easily transport their foods to markets in Brisbane, but building materials could also be accessed.

The arrival of the railway was probably a factor in John Mayes' decision to build the house we now know as Mayes Cottage, which was completed in January 1887.

John and Emily Mayes may well have been attracted to Australia by the stories they had heard from their relations, the Kingstons. Although the living conditions here then were rough, they represented an improvement to the prospects many working men faced back in England.

It is thought that stories of these opportunities were major factors in attracting new settlers to the colony. John and Emily Mayes and their two children, Joshua (3) and Ruth (1), sailed from England in the sailing ship "Indus" in 1871.

The family grew to 7 children. The district was beginning to expand as well, with more and more settlers coming in to take up the available land.

This plant "The Black Boy" is becoming more popular by the council in its landscaping projects.

It is a hardy plant (good in a drought) and they need fire to grow.

I never new until I saw this at Griffith University, that airstrips were built near where I live in Loganlea as backups in the defence of Brisbane.

They were never put into action and if they had, the area around here would probably be very different.
